Stones Forge. Kuźnia Skały handcraft from Poland
Kuźnia Skały is architect Marcin Skalski’s craft project merging black-smithing and woodworking. Coming form Lesser Poland’s countryside, my main inspiration is traditional applied art – ordinary everyday objects such as a ferruled wooden wheel or a scythe.
The birds
In my debut project I picked up a bird, which is one of the most common motifs in folk art. The bird figurines are very simple and synthetic in form. They’re made of local species of wood (usually ash, oak and walnut) and coated with linseed oil. The black ones are charred. The beaks and legs are handforged in steel and brass. Each figurine is entirely handcrafted and so there are no two exactly alike – each is unique. The wood is thoroughly polished up to bring to one’s mind the feeling of an old wooden handle smoothed by the years of its usage.
