Mickalene Thomas at Grand Palais Paris
“All About Love” is a major retrospective exhibition by American artist Mickalene Thomas (born 1971, New York), celebrating over 20 years of her work.
The show explores visibility, representation and empowerment of Black women and presents love as a political, transformative and liberating force — a theme inspired by bell hooks’s influential book All About Love: New Visions (1999). It includes paintings, collages, photographs, videos and installations, with bold colours, textures and ornamentation that reimagine classical portraiture through a queer, Black feminist lens.
This exhibition marks one of the most ambitious presentations of Thomas’s work and one of the most prominent solo shows by an African-American artist at the Grand Palais, celebrating both artistic innovation and social-cultural themes of identity, love, representation and liberation.
