Edyta Hul Haloxylon. A contemporary art exhibition in Warsaw
The exhibition presents Edyta Hul newest paintings, exploring organic forms, geological processes, sedimentation and transformation. There is also a sound installation by Agata Polak based on recordings of the artist’s bioelectric activity while she worked.
The paintings are about transformation. Edyta Hul uses forms that can evoke plants, minerals, fossils, cells or geological structures rather than depicting a straightforward landscape.
Haloxylon refers to a genus of desert plants, which connects the work to survival, adaptation and harsh environments.
The exhibition includes a sound installation based on recordings of the artist’s bioelectric activity while she was painting, so the artist’s physiological signals become part of the artwork.
Painting becomes almost experimental. Rather than simply representing something in nature, the works investigate how forms emerge, change and accumulate, somewhat like geological or biological processes.
The exhibition is in the historic Rusiecki Palace, which creates an interesting contrast between an old architectural space and Hul’s contemporary, organic-looking works.

The place itself is almost as interesting as the exhibition. The Edyta Hul show is inside the Pałacyk Rusieckiego, at Lwowska 13 – a small historic palace hidden behind the street-front tenement, inside its courtyard.
It was built around 1912–1914 for Stanisław Ursyn-Rusiecki, a wealthy art and antiquities collector. Unlike a typical palace standing prominently on a boulevard, this one is tucked away behind a large tenement.
Rusiecki used the palace to house an enormous collection including paintings, miniatures, porcelain, textiles, prints, manuscripts, old books and militaria.
It’s an eclectic, neo-Baroque-style villa, with a decorative entrance, columns, balcony and historic interior details. The building was conceived together with the tenement in front of it.
