Esteve Lucerón. La Perona. The space and the people

The Photographic Archive of Barcelona presents the exhibition Esteve Lucerón. La Perona. The space and the people, a project that Esteve Lucerón (La Pobla de Segur, 1950) made between 1980 and 1989 in Perona, one of the last slums of the city, located in the district of Sant Martí and demolished before the Olympic Games. The photographer, with a militant commitment to social problems, photographed the day-to-day life of that Roma community on the peripheries.

One of the surprising aspects of the photographs is the sorority among Roma women, with an entity and a much more important role than that of men.

Perona’s report is a milestone in Barcelona’s photographic documentary. In 2017 Esteve Lucerón gave the Photographic Archive of Barcelona the negatives and contacts of this extraordinary collection made up of 2,000 photographs.
