The title of the exhibition by Hans Op de Beeck – On Vanishing – refers to two senses of the word “vanishing”:
Disappearing suddenly and completely
Becoming zero, or reducing to nothingness
Hans Op de Beeck is interested in moments when a human being “becomes nothing or nobody”, relinquishing linguistic, logical, rational aspects to slip into a state of self-loss or timelessness. His work engages with themes of temporality, memory, the human condition, our staging of the world, and how objects, spaces, and figures can reflect loss or absence.
The works challenge the viewer. It asks you to slow down, to experience not just visually but sensorily, and to reflect on absence, presence, time, and identity.
