Gerhard Richter is considered one of the most important living artists due to his ability to engage with different styles and media over a long and evolving career. His works often explore themes of memory, history, and perception, frequently dealing with difficult and complex subject matter. His approach to abstraction, particularly through the use of squeegees to smear paint across the canvas, has influenced countless contemporary artists.
The retrospective at FLV Paris is unprecedented in scale for Richter. It’s one of the most comprehensive shows of his work ever held.
It includes rare loans from major museums and private collections. According to press sources, curators were very selective to build a deep, representative view of his work.
The exhibition is curated to highlight Gerhard Richter’s experimentation: how he balanced figuration and abstraction, and how his techniques (brush, squeegee, etc.) evolved over decades.
Around 270 works are on show, spanning Gerhard Richter’s career from 1962 to 2024.
