Famakan Magassa at Galerie Sabine Bayasli
Famakan Magassa is a contemporary Malian artist born in 1997, known for his satirical and empathetic paintings that comment on societal issues such as violence, vice, and the complexities of modern life. He often portrays his subjects in a grotesque yet comical light, capturing the absurd and often contradictory nature of society in which tradition and modernity clash.
Famakan Magassa paintings often feature humanoid figures referred to as “kôrêdugaws,” members of a non-religious society in Mali known for their wisdom, righteousness, and humility. These figures are depicted with exaggerated features and expressive colors, using humor and irony to address themes such as gluttony, greed, and the societal obsession with consumption.
