Vincent Fournier (born 1970, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) is a French photographic artist who lives and works between Paris and Arles. He studied sociology and visual arts at the University of Montpellier before graduating from the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles in 1997.
For more than two decades, Vincent Fournier has explored science, technology, science fiction and the imagined futures of humanity. His photographs move between documentary and fiction, examining subjects such as space exploration, humanoid robots, utopian architecture and the transformation of living organisms.
The Flora Incognita works by Vincent Fournier imagine botanical species evolving on distant, potentially habitable exoplanets, using photography, photogrammetry and 3D techniques.
The Flora Incognita project imagines a parallel botanical world on a potentially habitable exoplanet called Prima Sidera. Fournier takes plants from Earth and imagines how they might have evolved under radically different gravity, magnetic fields and atmospheric conditions.
What’s particularly interesting is that this isn’t simply digital fantasy. Fournier worked with scientists from the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, using photogrammetry and 3D techniques to create extremely precise, almost scientific-looking botanical images.
