Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art in Sapporo Japan

Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art was opened in July 1977 in central Sapporo. Its mission is to serve as a comprehensive modern art museum with both regional (Hokkaido) and international scope.

The museum’s collection spans a wide variety of genres, with focus on roughly five main categories: art from Hokkaido, works of the “École de Paris,” glasswork, modern Japanese art, and contemporary art.

Its mix of styles (ukiyo-e, ceramics, glasswork, European prints, modern Japanese art, contemporary pieces) offers a broad overview of art history and regional as well as global art trends.

The museum regularly displays both its permanent collection and rotating special exhibitions featuring works from Japan and abroad.

Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art relaxed atmosphere: the building, sculpture garden views, café and visitor amenities make it a comfortable visit even for those who want to go at their own pace.
