Risshaku-ji Temple. Yamadera

Risshaku-ji Temple – commonly known as Yamadera, which means “Mountain Temple” – is a famous and scenic Buddhist temple located in Yamagata Prefecture, in northern Japan. It is known for its dramatic mountain setting, peaceful atmosphere, and historical importance.

Risshaku-ji Temple was founded in 860 AD by Priest Ennin, also known as Jikaku Daishi, a prominent Tendai Buddhist monk.

The temple is built into the steep mountainside, and visitors must climb over 1,000 stone steps through a forested path to reach the main areas. Along the way, you’ll pass small shrines, statues, and moss-covered stone lanterns.

At the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the valley and surrounding mountains, especially beautiful in autumn or with winter snow.
